ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Bureau of Customs (BoC) recently adopted new and effective measures to prevent the entry of smuggled goods into the region which resulted in the seizure of 506 master cases of smuggled cigarettes worth about P22.77 million in nine anti-smuggling operations in the span of 20 days.,BoC Zamboanga City district collector Segundo Barte Jr. disclosed that the agency found a “new formula” and started to implement it in the Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) and in Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi (BaSulTa) provinces.,While Barte refused to give details on their new measures and strategies, he stressed that it is simple but effective incurbing smuggling in ZamPen and in the three provinces under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).,He added that authorities intercepted and seized 44 master cases in Pagadian City on 18 May followed by the seizure of 80 master cases of smuggled cigarettes in Malamawi Island in Basilan Province, 48 master cases in Liloy Zamboanga del Norte, 121 master cases in this city on 24 May, 52 master cases in Indanan, Sulu on 30 May, 51 master cases here on 4 June and 110 master cases on 7 June.,Barte said that their campaign will continue without any let-up to give a better chance to legitimate traders to make business in the region.,Among the smuggled brand of cigarettes they seized were Bros red, Nelson, Cannon, New Berlin, Bros green and, Fort, Absolute Famous, Cannon, New Berlin, Astro, San Marino, Soda, Royal, Union, Champion red and green, Tradition and New Far.,Meantime, BoC commissioner Rey Guerrero lauded the anti-smuggling strategist, plans and the manner of operations adopted by the local BoC here and ordered Barte to sustain the momentum it had gained in the fight against the smuggling of imported goods particularly tobacco leave products.
